What is Migraine?
Migraine is derived from the words, which mean half the head and it also sounds like demi-cranium since these migraine pains often hurt on only the left or right side of the head. But there are many people who suffer from these pains and have it on their entire head.
Causes of Migraine:
The cause of migraine is hormonal fluctuations which result in contraction of blood vessels in the hea d and neck, and their dilation. The causes of headaches and migraines are often similar and they can be caused by serious conditions like tumor, trauma or infections along with chemical changes in the brain, the reasons for which are still not determined. It has also been seen that migraines are the most common causes of primary headaches. During these migraine attacks the hormones over-react and instead of shifting from the contracted state to normal, these blood vessels dilate further. This causes increased pain and other brain activity is also accompanied with the same like release of chemicals, swelling of the brain and other processes that result in interplay of hormones and over-dilated blood vessels.
Symptoms of Migraine:
Usually migraine pains occur in phases and first phase, which is also known as the contraction phase, can last a few minutes, few hours or even for a few days. At this time the symptoms of these pains are spots in front of the eyes followed by difficulty in concentration, cold fingertips and hand, which is also known as the state of aura. However there are a lot of people who don’t recognize this phase of their headaches; and their related symptoms. It has been seen that headaches are very common symptoms of migraine and often these pains are misconceived to be regular headaches instead of migraine pains. When the headache is very severe, the patient experiences throbbing or pressure on the head, which is accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea vomiting and light sensitivity that also creates a hurdle in their regular functions.
Treatments of Migraines:
Basically migraines occur in a two-phase process and here the levels of these hormones are high and low. In this reference the treatments can either help or make the migraine pain or make it worse, and this largely depends on the timing of the same.
