What is Neuritis?

The term Neuritis is used to define the general inflammation of the peripheral nervous system. There are various kinds and types of neuritis, which can affect different regions and parts of the body. These include Polyneuritis or Multiple neuritis, Optic Neuritis, Brachial neuritis, Peripheral neuritis that is also referred to as Peripheral neuropathy, Vestibular neuritis, Cranial neuritis, which mainly represents Bell's Palsy and Arsenic neuritis. In optic neuritis, there is an inflammation of the optic nerve and this transmits visual information from the eyes to the brain. Some of the most common symptoms of are pain, which is worsened by eye movement and this reaches its peak in one week and then goes away in several days.

Symptoms of Neuritis:
It has been seen that symptoms of neuritis depend on the nerves involved and these often include pain, paresis, hypoesthesia or numbness in those areas, anesthesia, paralysis, wasting, paresthesia, along with the disappearance of the reflexes. The different kinds of neuritis have different symptoms like in peripheral neuritis damage occurs to a nerve, which is located within the peripheral nervous system and this can be caused by disease or illness. But bacteria or viruses usually do not cause these diseases but afflictions like AIDS, diabetes, seizures, alcoholism, and nutritional deficiencies can lead to the same. People suffering from this kind of neuritis experience pressure placed on the nerve due to remaining in one position for too long. There is also tingling and burning sensations in the affected area and there may also be numbness, loss of sensation, and paralysis in these areas.

Causes of Neuritis:
There are different kinds of causes of different types of neurosis and these also include infections like shingles, Herpes simplex, Leprosy and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Apart from this neuritis can also be caused due to chemical injuries and physical injuries along with radiation. The underlying conditions which cause neuritis are localized and hence affect a single nerve. Other causes of neuritis include Diphtheria, localized injury and diabetes. There are also various reasons that affect multiple nerves causing polyneuritis and these include deficiencies of B12 vitamins, Beriberi, Metabolic diseases, Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Porphyria, Infections caused due to bacteria and also viral infections, autoimmune diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, cancer, alcoholism and Wartenbergs migratory sensory neuropathy.

 

Treatment of Neuritis:
There are various kinds of treatments available for neuritis and these can be largely categorized into natural and home made remedies, exercises or physiotherapy and medications and solutions like barely brew should be taken.

  • Take ayurvedic herbs as brahmi, ashwaghanda and mandookparni.
  • Practice panchakarma.

Natural Home Remedies:

  • Take raw carrot and spinach.
  • Have Soya bean milk with honey and barley brew.
  • Use orange flowers.
  • Avoid refined cereals, white bread and sugar.
  • Take Epson salt baths.
  • Make paste with Soya beans and have it.
